REAXYS blocked by publisher

Due to excessive downloading (using harvesting software, in violation of licenses), Fondren Library's access to REAXYS has been blocked by the publisher (since 12/22/2011).

Library & IT staff are working to resolve the issue with REAXYS, and hope to have access restored within the next 2 weeks.

Snow comes to Fondren (after a fashion)

The heavy snow storm in the Northeast - with accompanying power outages - is affecting a number of Fondren Library's online services today. Services affected include:

* enhanced cataloging links in the online catalog (thumbnail images of the dust jackets, synopses, etc.) This is also causing slow response time for the catalog as it searches, searches, searches for the feed...

EBL ebooks - proxy sign in required at all times

Fondren Library is working with one of our ebook providers - EBL - to fully implement their useful features, including the ability to have a personal bookshelf of ebooks, and the ability to make personal notes in the ebook.

In order to activate these features, EBL needs to distinguish between users. We are testing various approaches, but at present (and until further notice) you will be asked to login to the Rice proxy (to distinguish you to EBL) even when on campus.

FirstSearch databases offline Sunday, 7/10 (morning)

"On Sunday, July 10 there will be a scheduled service downtime for the FirstSearch service from midnight until at least 5:00 am and possibly as late as 10:00 a.m. Houston time. This temporary service interruption is required so we can upgrade storage systems and capacity for all OCLC services.

This event is part of ongoing upgrades that OCLC undertakes in order to improve services for all member libraries. We are working to minimize outages in the future, and upgrades such as this will help us provide better, more robust services going forward. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes to your library."
